Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island city-state located on the southern
tip of the Malay Peninsula, in Southeast Asia, 137 kilometers north of the equator. Consisting
of 63 islands, Singapore is separated from Malaysia by the Jor Strait, to the north, and from
the Riau Islands (Indonesia) by the Singapore Strait, to the south. The country has the
highest Human Development Index (HDI) of Asian countries (9th best in the world in 2014).
Its territory is highly urbanized, but almost half of it is covered by vegetation. However, more
land is being created for development through the process of sea landfilling.
